Flexible dates and nearby airports: how to compare flight options
Changing the travel date or airport can change the available schedules, carriers and fares. The useful comparison is the complete itinerary, including ground travel and total journey time.
When flexible dates help
Flexible dates are most useful when your trip is not tied to a fixed event or appointment. Comparing adjacent dates can reveal different schedules and fare inventory without changing the destination.
When a nearby airport makes sense
Consider alternate airports when they are realistically reachable. Compare parking, rideshare, train or rental-car costs and the extra time needed to reach the airport.
Do not compare airfare alone
An alternate airport may show a lower flight price but add hours of ground travel. Use the total trip cost and total journey time as part of the decision.
Check the return trip too
For round trips, evaluate both directions. An alternate airport that works well outbound may be inconvenient on the return, particularly with late arrivals or limited ground transportation.
